A few hours after the Income Tax Department searched his Bengaluru office, Confident Group Chairman CJ Roy is said to have shot himself to death on Friday, January 30. Despite receiving medical attention, Roy allegedly shot himself and passed away soon after. The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated by the authorities.
In addition to being a well-known real estate developer, Roy had strong connections to the entertainment and film industries. Over the years, he produced eight Kannada and Malayalam films and backed several large-scale cinema projects, some of them featuring top stars from the South film industry.
2012 saw the release of Casanovva, a high-profile action thriller produced by CJ Roy. At the time, it was marketed as the highest-budget Malayalam movie. A few years later, he co-produced the multilingual Mohanlal and Priyadarshan movie Marakkar, which reportedly had a budget of Rs 100 crore. On November 8, 2021, he posted the movie's poster and wrote, "EXCITED." I'm traveling to Chennai to watch my big film, Marakkar, with Mohan Lalji and the crew. "The First Screening Ever." Over the years, his business, Confident Group, has also supported a number of entertainment and movie projects. For several seasons of the Mohanlal-hosted Malayalam television reality series Bigg Boss Malayalam, the group was the title sponsor. Roy was more than just a producer when it came to entertainment.
In an interview with The Times of India, Roy explained why he concentrated solely on Kannada and Malayalam cinema, saying, "The costs of locations and lodging facilities for the cast and crew take up about half of a film's budget." Because my properties are either used as locations or to house everyone involved in the production, I am able to save on those aspects. I only make movies where I have commercial interests because of this as well.
The Confident Group was founded by CJ Roy, a well-known real estate developer and builder from Kochi, Kerala. He continued to be involved in the film industry, making Malayalam films, in addition to his business endeavors. His long-standing interest in movies outside of his real estate business was evident in his work in the film industry, particularly in large-scale productions like Casanovva and Marakkar.
