On January 9, 2026, his directorial short film Tanvi the Great was selected for the 98th Academy Awards' Best Live Action Short Film category. The Bollywood movie is one of nine that were chosen from 187 submissions from all over the world.
It is important to remember that neither the top 15 shortlisted films category nor the final nomination list are included in this shortlist. The Academy Awards jury releases this list to honor the top 200 films worldwide that meet Oscar requirements and qualify for consideration.
Anupam Kher wrote a lengthy message to his followers on social media. "OSCAR... BEST FILM... SHORTLIST... TANVI THE GREAT"The most prestigious film awards, the #OSCARS, are given to thousands of films each year from all over the world! The senior actor wrote, "Millions of people in the film industry work very hard to get that initial nod and appreciation by the @theacademy."
"This also puts one in the category of the few very best in the business," added the actor-director of Tanvi the Great. Naturally, being nominated and ultimately winning will be the best feeling.
