New Delhi

has been given permission to resume his role in cricket administration after the Supreme Court on Thursday, February 5, removed the restriction that prevented him from participating in the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) operations. The ruling lifts a ban that had been in effect since January 2017.

The former president of the BCCI is now allowed to interact with the board in accordance with its policies. After reviewing Thakur's application for relief from the restriction that had been in place for more than eight years, the Supreme Court changed its previous ruling.

A bench made up of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Chief Justice Surya Kant heard the case. The bench used the proportionality doctrine when reviewing the 2017 decision and came to the conclusion that the previous guidance was no longer necessary. Consequently, the court modified its earlier ruling, allowing Thakur to take part in BCCI-related events.

The top court ordered Thakur to "cease and desist" from joining the board in January 2017. That order came after he was charged with contempt and perjury on January 2, 2017. A false affidavit that Thakur filed regarding correspondence with Shashank Manohar, the chairperson of the International Cricket Council at the time, regarding the BCCI's autonomy was connected to the proceedings.

The court also considered later developments in the case during the hearing on Thursday. During the earlier proceedings, Thakur is thought to have offered the court an unconditional apology. The bench reevaluated the ban's ongoing validity in light of this apology.

After Thakur personally appeared before the court and made an unqualified apology, the Supreme Court granted him partial relief on July 14, 2017, by dismissing the contempt and perjury cases. But up until now, his affiliation with the BCCI had been restricted.

That restriction has been officially lifted with the most recent order. The decision restores Thakur's eligibility to participate in BCCI affairs, subject to the organization's current policies and procedures, even though it does not give him a specific position on the board.
