Prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup, Italy, ranked 29th in the ICC T20I rankings, defeated Ireland.
DubaiOn Monday, January 26, Italy shocked Ireland for the first time in the game's shortest format by chasing down the target of 155 runs. When Italy needed 16 runs in the last over, Grant Stewart was their hero, hitting three straight sixes. Before defeating Ireland in the final match at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, Italy put up a strong fight in the first two Twenty20 Internationals of the three-match series.
Before being bowled out in 19.4 overs, Ireland scored 154 runs while batting first in the match. With 45 runs off of 38 balls, Paul Stirling was their leading scorer, but none of the other batters were able to put up a respectable total. In his four-over spell, Italy's star with the ball was Crishan Kalugamage, who claimed three wickets for just 28 runs.
As Italy limited Ireland to a respectable total, Stewart and JJ Smuts each took two wickets with the ball.
Italy is led by Madsen and Stewart.Italy lost their first two wickets for just 22 runs in 3.4 overs, so the chase didn't get off to a great start. The target appeared distant to them at 68/4 in the tenth over, but captain Wayne Madsen remained steady to prevent them from collapsing. However, he was dismissed after scoring 39 runs, and he soon trailed Gian Meade on 22 and again at 111/6 in the 17th over, when Italy appeared to be losing the series 3-0.
Stewart, on the other hand, kept his side in the pursuit and had different ideas. He accomplished the unimaginable by hitting three consecutive sixes when they needed 16 runs to win in the final over, leading his team to victory in a historic run chase. When Ireland collapsed under the most unlikely circumstances, Barry McCarthy was the one to bear the wrath. However, they ended up winning the series 2-1.
