All 15 people on board were killed when a small aircraft crashed in a remote rural area on Wednesday in the northeastern Colombian province of Norte de Santander, according to state-run airline Satena.Rescue crews raced in to "assess the condition of the passengers" after local authorities in Curasica were notified of the crash site.Diogenes Quintero, a politician, and members of his team were also on board, according to the airline's passenger list. Carlos Salcedo, who was running for a seat in Congress in the March elections, was also on the list.
The worst fears were later confirmed by Colombia's Transportation Ministry, which said that "once the aircraft was located on site, authorities regrettably confirmed that there were no survivors." At 11:42 a.m. local time, the aircraft, registered HK4709, took off from the Cucuta airport for a brief 40-minute flight to Ocana, a nearby mountainous municipality.
Minutes after takeoff, the last message was lost.The aircraft last communicated with air traffic control a few minutes after takeoff, according to Satena. Thirteen passengers, including Diogenes Quintero, a representative of victims of local armed conflict, were on board along with two crew members. Authorities are now concentrating on recovery efforts and investigations into what caused the fatal crash, as the tragic loss has left the area in shock.
Diogenes Quintero was who?Quintero, 36, was well-known in the conflict-ridden border area with Venezuela as a leading human rights advocate. He was elected in 2022 as one of the 16 delegates selected to represent victims of Colombia's protracted armed conflict. He works as a lawyer. His party leaders lamented his passing and recalled him as a dedicated leader who cared about his community's well-being. Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, also shared his sorrow on social media, saying, "I am deeply saddened by these deaths." I send their families my deepest sympathies.
